How clinicians use it
Kids learn to cool down; caregivers learn to catch the good. Use the child pages in session and the caregiver trackers at home — then graph the change.
Built for
- Children 4–12 with frequent anger, defiance, tantrums, or aggression
- Caregiver-involved sessions (most of the change happens at home)
- School-based work with teacher tracking
A simple flow
- Count a baseline: outbursts per day/week, with intensity and length.
- Pick objectives for the child and the caregiver.
- Teach the Anger Volcano and Cool-Down Menu in play.
- Coach caregivers on Special Play, praise, clear directions, and a reward chart; rehearse in session.
- Build a Calm Limits plan together for the hard moments.
- Graph weekly outbursts and praise counts; adjust the plan.
Informed by
From the kit’s evidence snapshot: In the 2024 evidence-base update in the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology (see also effectivechildtherapy.org), the best-supported treatments for young children's disruptive behavior are all caregiver-focused behavior therapy: positive attention, clear directions, consistent consequences, and practice with feedback. Plan for most sessions to include the caregiver. The praise and play pages here are original tools drawing on widely used child-directed play and positive-attention principles; they're not a PCIT or other branded protocol. Screen for safety, trauma, and family stressors behind the behavior.
