Online therapy in California
Video therapy is ordinary now. The part that is not ordinary, and that people skip, is the license. The clinician has to be licensed where you are, not just where their office is. Here is how that works in California, and how to choose between a national platform and a local group.
This page is educational. It is not therapy, not a directory, and not a ranking of apps. If you want a therapist, start at Advantage Mental Health. If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.
The license has to match where you are
If you are physically in California when the session happens, the person treating you generally needs to be licensed (or otherwise authorized) to practice in California. If you travel to another state, the rule follows you, not your home address. A therapist licensed only in one state cannot casually keep seeing you from a vacation in another. Ask. A decent office already thinks about this.
License lookups are public. In California, that is the Board of Behavioral Sciences for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs, and the Board of Psychology for psychologists. You are allowed to look someone up before you book. You are allowed to ask, “Are you licensed in California, and what is the license number?”
I am Mason Anglin, PsyD, LMFT. California license LMFT #121211. That is the license that belongs with clinical work, not with this educational hub.
A local group versus a national platform
Two common doors:
- A local practice that also does telehealth. You get a specific clinician, a specific office culture, and usually a way to be seen in person if you want that later. Advantage Mental Health is one of those: Roseville and Fair Oaks, plus video for people who are in California and a fit for the practice.
- A national platform. People search names like BetterHelp and Talkspace. Those are large matching services. They can be convenient. They are also a different product than a small group that knows its own clinicians. Therapist Front Page is not currently paid to recommend them, and this page will not paste an affiliate URL or invent a price.
A local licensed clinician is often a better fit if you want continuity, a person you can stay with, and someone who already works in the same state you live in. A platform can be a place to start if you need something this week and you are willing to treat it as a start, not as the last office you will ever use. Ask who you are actually meeting, what license they hold, and what happens if you want to switch.
How to choose, without a scorecard
Useful questions, whether the door is a platform or a group:
- Are you licensed in California, and will you still be if I travel?
- Is this therapy, or is it coaching?
- Who do I contact if I need to cancel, or if I do not feel safe?
- What does the first session actually include?
- If this is not a fit, how do I get matched with someone else?
Video is still a session. Sit somewhere you can speak without performing for the next room. Test the link early. Headphones help. You do not need a beautiful background. For a longer walkthrough of the first hour, read what a first session is usually like.
If you want this family of practices
Advantage Mental Health is a real local and telehealth option: Roseville and Fair Oaks, and video when you are in California and the fit is right. This hub is not the clinic. Booking happens there.
If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
